Summary:Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a condition that describes a metabolic disorder caused by various etiologies indicated by chronic hyperglycemia accompanied by carbohydrates metabolism disorder, fats, and proteins, as a result of defects in insulin secretion, insulin or both of them. Most cases of DM type 2 is caused by hereditary, obesity and lifestyle. In Indonesia, it is estimated that the number of people with DM has increased in the adult age groups and in all socio-economic status. Objective: The objective of the study was to identify risk factors of DM type 2 in elderly in Sukoharjo district, Province of Central Java. Method: This was an observational analytic study with a case control study. The number of samples were 230 respondents, consisting of 115 case and 115 control groups. The case group was patients with DM type 2, they were elderly patients with newly diagnosed of DM, meanwhile the control group was elderly who were not diagnosed with DM type 2. Result: Multivariate analysis result showed that risk factors that had a significant relationship to DM type 2 was family history with DM OR = 2.158 (p = 0.007), lack of physical activity OR = 2.004 (p = 0.012), and abdominal obesity OR = 1.985 (p = 0.016). Conclusion: Family history with diabetes, lack of physical activity, and abdominal obesity have a significant relationship, and become risk factors of DM type 2 in elderly in the district of Sukoharjo, and the dominant risk factor is family history with DM.
