Summary: | Background: Breast milk is the most important food to support optimal
growth and development in children. But, nationally the coverage of
exclusive breastfeeding is still low at 32% and very far from the national
target set by the Ministry of Health by 80%. Delivery in hospital can reduce
the level of breastfeeding since babies are often separated from their
mothers and formula milk becomes more readily available.
Objective: To determine the effect of maternity care in the hospital on the
duration of full breastfeeding in Banjarmasin Municipality of South
Kalimantan.
Method: A prospective cohort study complemented with a qualitativestudy
was conducted in Ulin and Ansyari Saleh Hospitals in Banjarmasin
Municipality. Subject were mothers of normal delivery in Ulin and Ansyari
Saleh Hospitals and followed until the infants were 6 weeks of age.
Sampling technique used purposive sampling. The sample size was 124
quantitative study respondents and 10 qualitative study informants. The
quantitative data analysis consisted of bivariable analysis using chi-square
test, and multivariable using binomial regression.
Results: Mothers who received good maternity care affected the duration
of full breastfeeding for 6 weeks of 1.6 times greater than those who
received bad maternity care (RR = 1.6, 95% CI = 1.29 to 1 , 90). The
duration of breastfeeding was also influenced by the mothers education,
knowledge and age as well as husbands support.
Conclusion: There was the effect of maternity care on the duration of
breastfeeding. It is necessary to supervise the implementation of SOP
(Standard Operating Procedure) concerning maternity care provided and
to increase knowledge about breastfeeding for mothers, especially those
in young age.
