citizens. The Menteng area was designed as the first park settlement area in
Indonesia that has numerous public spaces. Several small parks scattered around this
area and supported by trees along roadsides. This research concern is on the
utilization of such parks as public space it observes the users of public parks. The
research was done in three parks, namely Menteng park, Situ Lembang park, and
Suropati park.
This reserach used deductive-qualitative approach to find out the park�s
character and utilization pattern. Data collection method used were interviews,
questionnaires, and field observations.
The research found different the characteristic of three parks. Seen from
user�s status and age, Menteng park is more dominated by teenagers and children,
while of Suropati park are adults and elder people. Meanwhile, Situ Lembang park is
dominated by adults and teenagers. Service coverage in Menteng park and Suropati
park are wider compared to Situ lembang park. Public space�s utilization pattern in
Menteng park is based on its activities taking place in groups gathered. The park has
several spatial zone characters that result in one activity has different nature to one
another. Place setting in Menteng park is more interactive and dynamic that makes
this park is dominated by students and children. Determinant factors of visitors and
public park utilization are closeness related to transportation access, habit,
recreational motivation, and range of facilities such as children playground and sport
facilities. This research recomended that, to design a public space, in addition to pay
attention to park elements and range of facilities, one should also pay attention to
several factors such as service coverage, number of inhabitant served, the landmass in
a certain area, and their spread in a certain area. |
