| description | The purpose of this research is to analyze the partiality of Republika in its
news related to the cigarette ban which is announced by Muhammadiyah in
Republika daily by seeing the news construction. The research conducted is
qualitative research using critical discourse analysis (CDA) method by Norman
Fairclough. The object of the research is the news of cigarette ban reported in
Republika daily of 17 March until 16 April, 2010. The cigarette ban which is
announced by Muhammadiyah becomes a polemic in the society since the
majority of Indonesian people are Muslim. The aim of this research is to look at
the position of Republika since Republika declares itself as the newspaper for
Muslim society in Indonesia with its mission to send all the useful information to
Muslim society. From 17 March until 16 April, 2010, there are three news which
are analyzed. The data analysis is conducted in three levels. Those are text,
discourse practice and socio-cultural practice. On the text level, the analysis is
done by analyzing the articles in Republika Daily. In the discourse practice level,
the interpretation is done by interpreting the text which is connected with the
discourse practice done by the institution. The last one, the socio-cultural practice
level, the analysis is done by observing some factors such as situational,
institutional and social factors which is influencing the text production.
Based on those three levels of analyses, it can be concluded that Republika
supports the cigarette ban which is announced by Muhammadiyah. However,
Republika construes that it is unnecessary to make the ban becomes a polemic in
the society. Republika sees that the cigarette ban issue is not only related to
religion issue, but also health and economy issue, especially the poor. At the end,
it can be seen that Republika constructs the cigarette ban issue in its news by
emphasizing the disadvantages which are emerged. |
