study discusses how the impact of modernization on the Western
lifestyle and mentality of the elite Chinese in Batavia in the late
colonial period. Elite Chinese majority from among the Peranakan
Chinese is a social group that is open and adaptive to alien cultural
influences. Primary sources in this study consists of articles in
magazines and Chinese newspapers, travel notes, photos
documentation, the source of Chinese novels, Indonesia, and West, as
well as the utilization of alternative sources such as cartoons and
documentaries.
Problems in this study is how the influence of Western
modernization to the application of an elite lifestyle of the upper
peranakan Chinese. Chinese elite lifestyle that seemed luxurious
place them as ethnic stigmatize who likes to show off luxury and
aligned with the Jews in Europe. The concept of lifestyle and
consumption of commodities or Featherstone Chaney can be used as
a framework for understanding the elements associated with the
application of Chinese elite lifestyle in the late colonial period. These
problems can be drawn two questions. How can the spread of Western
modernity affect lifestyle and why they apply the Western lifestyle in
everyday life.
From this study it was found that the application of Western
lifestyles due to modernization through the regulatory of government,
education, mass media, and social interaction and imitation of
Western lifestyles in the Dutch community in Batavia. The use of the
symbols of material into an ethnic marker that is associated with
social groups on it and also at the same time as a marker of social
groups below it. The development of modernity is not only limited to
the use of the material symbol, but the increasingly widespread use of
the symbol on the immaterial. In general there are six factors that
underlie the application of Chinese elite lifestyle in Batavia associated
with the development of modernization in the late colonial period and
all the logical consequences of the Chinese elite as a change agent
(the agent of change) urban urban lifestyle. |
