Summary: | Indonesia's geographical location in the equatorial regions, resulting in the
occurrence of thunder-day high enough compared to other countries i.e.
between100 -200 days per year. Lightning surge can cause over voltage and can
cause tissue damage to the low voltage network and low voltage electrical
equipment. Damage to electrical equipment caused by statistical overvoltage
reaches 31.68%. This percentage is the largest compared with other causes of the
damage to electrical devices. Arrester is a device used to protect equipment and
electrical system from overvoltages that one reason is the surge of lightning.
Many low-voltage arrester on the market and can be used to protect domestic
electrical appliances.
This research was conducted in three low-voltage arrester on the market.
Third low voltage arrester characteristics tested in the laboratory High Voltage
Engineering, Gadjah Mada University by giving AC voltage with a value below
its maximum operating voltage (Uc) to more than Uc both arrester in new
condition and after running aground impulse to know the characteristics of
leakage current voltage arrester. Then arrester rated peak impulse voltage 3kV to
24kV to determine the effect of impulse voltage rise on the nature of low voltage
surge arrester cuts in an effort to protect domestic electrical appliances. In
addition, one of the arrester will be given some chopped impulse voltage to
determine the quantity of chopped impulses to the level of protection (margin) of
the arrester.
The results and discussion show that each of the arrester in new condition
and after a hit by impulse, the UC has a leakage current below 1 mA
(corresponding International Standard IEC 61643-1 Edition 2.0 03/2005). Value
of the tested arrester residual voltage is still below the BIL of low voltage
electrical equipment based on national standards of Indonesia (SNI) 04-7021.2.1-
2004. The quantity of exposure to impulse voltage proportional to the value of
residual voltage, but inversely proportional to the margin of protection. Arrester
under test can only be used on low voltage electrical equipment with (Basic
Impuls Insulation Level) (BIL) 2000 volts.
