Summary: | Background: Birth weight is closely related to the growth of the fetus.
Birth weight remains a health problem in developing countries including
Indonesia. Some studies still show differences in the results regarding the
relationship between pregnant womens physical activity and birth weight.
Objective: To determine the effect of pregnant womens physical activity
within their third trimester of pregnancy to birth weight in Harjamukti sub
district of Cirebon Municipality.
Methods: This was an observational study using a prospective cohort
design with a quantitative approach. The target population was the third
trimester pregnant women residing in areas of Cirebon Municipality. The
data were collected through interviews using structured questionnaires
and weighing babies. Stages in the statistical analysis used were
univariable, bivariable and multivariate (multiple linear regression).
Results: The results of correlation test between the physical activity of
third trimester pregnant women and birth weight showed a significant
relationship (r = -0.33, p = 0.0026). Significant relationships also occurred
in other variables such as energy intake (r = 0.61, p = 0.000) parity (p =
0.003) and maternal age (p = 0.01).
Conclusion: Higher physical activity of pregnant women in third trimester
resulted in lower birth weight. Energy intake, parity and maternal age were
also variables that affected birth weight.
