description AISI 1008 steel is a low carbon steel type, with the carbon (C) content less than 0.1%. In general, low carbon steel has several advantages, it has a good ductility, toughness, weldability, machinability, and relatively low price. However, low carbon steel also has some disadvantages such as low hardness and high corrosion rate. One of methods to improve corrosion resistance of steel is hard chromium plating. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of currents and time of hard chromium plating process on the microstructure, hardness, corrosion rate and wear rate on low carbon steel (AISI 1008). The hard chromium plating process used current variation of 10A, 20A and 30A with processing time of 20, 40 and 60 minutes. The analysis of the microstructure was carried out by optical microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Hardness test was done using Vickers hardness testing method and corrosion test by three-electrode cell type with potentiostat PGS-201T in of 0.5% NaCl solution as corrosion medium. Test results showed that the coating formed by the hard chromium plating process is strongly influenced by the current and the coating process time. The hardness value increases with increasing current as well as time. The highest hardness in the hard chromium plating process with current 30A and 60 minutes is 990 VHN. Corrosion rate decreases with increasing current and processing time. The lowest corrosion rate with current 30A and time of 60 minutes is 0.841 mm / year. The lowest specific wear with current 30A and time of 60 minutes is 0.00000015mm2/kg.
