Summary: | Because more papuan migrates and lives in urban area, therefore, the need
for housing in the city is increasing. At the same time, the Papuans� life is
changing as they experience urban culture. This study aims to identify Papuans�
housing preferences. It also to identify characters/variables that affect such
preferences.
This research used descriptive method. There were three different
residential location located at the District of Heram and Abepura were chosen as
case studies. The respondents questioned as sample in this research were 80
people/households. Data were analysed by a combination of qualitative and
quantitative methods. This research concludes that there is no significant
difference of housing preference between Papuan and other community. In
general, Papuans have similar housing preferences with other community.
Cultural factor doesn�t influence the Papuan in selecting for the location of a
urban houses. In other words, the Papuans in Jayapura are no longer tied to the
values of their hometown�s culture. It is also seen that no significant relations
between the location of the house with employment and education background.
Significant relationship was found between the three cases and the rising income
of the Papuans. As it is known, this phenomenon also occurs in other cities in
Indonesia.
