THERMAL PROPERTIES OF REACTIVE PHB/ENR-50 BLENDS

description |
.PHB/ENR-50 blends are reactive at temperatures above the melting point of PHB in the melt state. This is evidenced by the two glass transitions which upon progression of the reaction gradually shift toward each other, eventually merging into a single transition. The trend of the glass transitions suggests that the reaction enhances miscibility of the immiscible PHB/ENR-50 blends. In fact the reaction has resulted in the fundamental changes of the molecular properties that are central to the PHB/ENR blend system and PHAs in general. This paper reports our study on the crystallization and melting behavior of the PHB using DSC and polarizing optical microscopy techniques. Comparison of results before and after the reaction is the focus of this discussion. The equilibrium melting temperatures associated with PHB show a remarkable decrease due to the reaction. The overall rate of isothermal crystallization of PHB, analyzed according to Avrami equation, reveals a decreasing trend with the time of reaction. The linear growth rate of the spherulite measured using POM also show similar trend.
|
