Summary: |
It has been known that out of 144 million ha offorestland in Indonesia, some ofthem have suffered
from deforestation. land degradation. and stand impoverishment. The wood production ofnaturaJ forest
is reasonably low and its potential to meet wood demand has been declining steadily. The program for
developing plantation forest (HTI) began in 1980s with the objective of reducing the pressure to the
existing natural forest. It is apparent that the HTI project has not met the target in terms of size and
productivity.
Indonesia has a long experience with long-rotation plantation, such as teak (feetana granJis) and
Pinus merkusii, particularly in Java. Experiences have also been gained in the plantation establishment of
dipterocarps. Excellent plots of dipterocarps in Java, successful reforestation programs with P. merkusii
