description | <p>Natural production forests in Indonesia are dominated by mixed dipterocarp forests and selectively<br />
harveSted under the Tebang Pilih Tanam Indonesia (Indonesian Selective Cutting and Planting<br />
System) or TPTI. Under this system it is allowed to harvest all commercial mature trees with a diameter<br />
limit of 50 cm dbh in the production forest and of 60 cm dbh in the limited production forest with a<br />
cutting cycle of35 years.<br />
At the diameter limit of 50 cm more number of harvestable trees and timber could be produced,<br />
consequently more timber could be extracted. but its quality is relatively low.Timber extracted from a<br />
tree with diameter class of 50-59 cm could not principally be categorised into first or prime grade,<br />
although the timber is actually very good without any defect. Small mature trees (dbh 50 to 59 cm)<br />
yielded on average only 3.1 mJ/tree, ranged from 1.6 to 5.2 mJ/tree, with a log quality according to<br />
Indonesian Grading Rule for Round Timber (JGR) commonly third or local grade, only a little portion<br />
(about 18%)could be categorised to second grade.<br />
In order to produce timber with a biggerdimension and higher quality the existing diameter limitof<br />
tree to be harvest (SOcm) should be raised. Raising the diameter limit of trees to be cut can lead to higher<br />
volume of each extracted tree and their timber quality will be also better. Furthermore, theoretically the<br />
cutting cycle could even be reduced.</p> |
