Description
Summary:
Sludge is the solid residual material that usually has been composted aerobically for a short period
and partially digested under heated in anaerobiccondition. Anumber of chemical analysesdone on sludge
from P'TSIER (Surabaya Industrial Estate Rungkut) contained much organic matter and nutrients (N, P.
K, Ca, Mg etc.) for plant growrh, however, revealed that the sludge contained subtantial amounts of
various heavy metals. PT SIER itself produced 2-5 ton sludge per week, which it has managed 216
industrial units. The industrial estate sludge in preliminary trials showed beneficial effects on the growth
of food plants and flowering of omamentaI plants.
This research was carried out in a glass house of the Facudy of Forestry GMU. Red-Yellow
Podzolic soil (Ultisols) from HPH PT Segara Indochem, Sangkulirang, East Kalimantan Province was
used as the medium, sludge from PT SIER as a treatment on G. arborea seedling with 5 doses i.e. 0, 5,
10, 15,20,25 and 30 glkg soil. This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of the sludge on the
growth (height, diameter. total of dry weight) and quality of seedlings (top-root ratio, sturdiness and
seedling quality index). Completely randomized design was used in the experiment with 5 replications.
The result of statistical analyses showed that the application of the sludge was highly significant at
I% level at all measurenments. The use of sludge wasable to incease dry weight 12times compared with
control (control =0.558 g
