Summary: |
Diabetes mellitus patients have been identified to some degree as having memory impairment, and, on the. other hand, meditation is known to be capable of regulating mental condition and decreasing depression symptoms. The aim of this research is to experimentally study the effectiveness of meditation method in increasin~ short term memory performance on diabetes mellitus patients. The subjects consist of 30 diabetes mellitus patients (15 men and 15 women) recruited from a hospital and assigned randomly into 2 groups, i.e. control group and experiment group. The age of the subjects ranges from 21 to 69 year old. The experiment group received treatment of mindfulness meditation exercise guided by a qualified instructor within quarterly mOeetingsof 25 minutes for each. In this study the pretest-post test control group design was adopted. The result of this study indicates that there is no significant difference in the scores of recognition memory tests between control group and experiment group, even though the experiment group shows a relatively higher score. There is also no significant difference in short memory scores between men and women, as well as between more than 60-year-old subject and those less than 60- year-old. As well, there is an indication of the subjects feeling .more relaxed, refreshed (rejuvenated), and mo~e capable of focusing (on a parti~ular task) upon undergoing meditation.
