The orientalists in the middle of nineteenth century depicted their amazement on finding this phenomenon. They tried to place latah into several cultural and psychological tenns, such as cultural bound syndrome, regional peculiarities, psychodrama shamanic, hysterical psychosis, arctic hysteria, reactive psychosis, startled reaction, and fright neurosis.Latah has become part of the power discourse in defining the identity of the Malays, which is in between of personal and'public place, profane and sacred realm, and consciousnessand unconsciousness.This article tries to analyzethe articleson latahwhich is consideredas socialand cultural phenomenonin SoutheastAsian countries,particularlyin Indonesia.</p> |
