description
Background: Panoramic radiography is a radiographic technique that is often done in dentistry with the purpose of diagnosis using relatively low doses X-ray. Several reasons such as image quality, error position and stages of the clinical procedure often lead to repeat x-ray exposure in dentistry which cause increasing the number of micronucleus. Micronucleus is believed as the marker for early stages of carcinogenesis mechanism formed by X-ray radiation The purpose of this study was to determine ifthere is any differences number of micronucleus in the gingival mucosa between single and repeated X-raysexposure of panoramic radiography patients.
Methods: Subjects obtained from Dentomaxillofacial radiology Departement of Prof.Soedomo Dental Hospital. The repeated exposure's subjects are the patients whose taken repeated X-rayexposure because of the lack of picture quality reasons or purposes for the stages of work procedures at the clinic. Samples taken from swabbed anterior gingivalmucosa shortly after x-ray exposure and in the next 10 days. The counting of increasing the number of micronucleus was evaluated using modified Feulgen-Rossenbeck methods. Statistical analysis was performed using the Paired t-test and Student's t-test.
Results: UsingPaired t-test analysis showed there is a significant increase in micronucleus between the initial swab and the last swab both in single or repeated exposure, in the maxillary and mandibular gingival mucosa. Student's t-test analysis showed no significantincrease in micronucleus between single and repeated exposure.
Conciusion:Tthere is no significant differences of increasing the number of micronucleus on repeated exposure than single exposure in patients with X-raypanoramic radigraphy, but there is an increase in the number of micronucleus between shortly after X-rayexposure and the next 10 days.
