Summary:Background: Essential hypertension is one of the heart disease cause of death in the world with a predicate silent killer. Prevalence of hypertension in population over 18 years old in Indonesia amount to 31.7%. The proportion of new cases of hypertension at young age in 2010 in Boyolali was 17,9% and Banyudono I Health Center is the higher contributor to new cases (238 cases) among other health centers. Objective: Know the risk factors for essential hypertension in young adults in Banyudono sub district Boyolali district. Methods: The matched case control study design with ratio 1:1. The case is essential hypertension patients who have been diagnosed by doctor in health center in the period January-September 2011, and control is a neighbor of cases that had not been diagnosed with essential hypertension. Analysis by McNemar X 2 test, OR and conditional logistic regression. Results: The majority of subjects aged 30-40 years, male, educated elementary and high school and has a job as a farmer Bivariate analysis showed variable family history, obesity, alcohol consumption, smoking, less physical activity, psychosocial stress and excessive salt intake significantly with OR between 1.6 to 3.0. The results of multivariate analysis showed of risk factors of essential hypertension in young adults after adjusted with other variables are alcohol consumption (OR=2.01 95% CI 1.234-3.285), excessive salt consumption (OR=1.98 95% CI 1.269-3.119), less physical activity (OR = 1.87 95% CI 1203- 2.924), and obesity (OR = 1.81 95% CI 1.094-3.006). Conclusion: Risk factors for essential hypertension in young adults are alcohol consumption, excessive salt intake, less physical activity and obesity.
