river, making river areas experiencing pollution, so things get changed, area rivers
become dumping grounds for garbage and waste. But lately, appeared an effort to
make improvements to the condition of the polluted river in the form of collective
action
This study examines the actors who are involved, how the collective action
undertaken and the forms of social relationship that was established to restore the
social functioning Gajah Wong River, and what the outcome of such collective
action. The research method used in the form of field research approach or a
qualitative field work, data collection is done by observation, review of existing
documents, and opened interviews with 54 respondents consisting of civil society,
state sector and NGOs / CSOs with a snowball technique sampling.
Results showed that, there are differences in the movement and use of the
river that occurred from time to time. Before the 1980s, the community is
dependent on the river to meet daily needs, they run activities around the area of
the river, so the local tradition was born. Area rivers also serve as a place to
communicate and receive information. In the year 1980 - 2004, the river suffered
heavy pollution. The situation is what makes civil society stay away, and alienated
from the environment and local traditions that developed around the banks of
rivers. While the action of cleaning and repairs to the area of the river done
individually. In the year 2004 - 2010, things began to change. At this time the
NGOs / CSOs and the state sector, began to get involved in the preservation and
improvement of river conditions. Pemersihan efforts and awareness continues to
be done, until the growing mindset of environmental, as well as the collective
consciousness that evolved into collective action to restore social functioning
river. This collective action, prompting some public facilities development on the
edge of the river, which can be accessed by all layers of society.
In short it can be said that, before 1980, civil society use the river and
surrounding area for the move, at that time the river conditions are still very clean,
although there is no maintenance action that is collective. In 1980-2004, the area
of the river becomes very dirty, the cleaning action of the river done individually,
ironically, the involvement of NGOs / CSOs and the state sector is also very
weak. The new collective action seen after 2004, the actor involved is civil
society, NGOs / CSOs and the state sector. This action produces some of the
construction of public facilities, growing public awareness, as well as the
functioning of Gajah Wong River area as public space. |
