description Sengir area is located in Prambanan District, Yogyakarta Special Province, Indonesia. This area is considered to be a susceptible area to landsliding due to the interactions of unfavorable conditions such as steep morphology, weak engineering properties of lithology, and landuse changing. Moreover, there are significant numbers of landslide traces which are found in the area and those landslides have provoked several considerable disasters to the habitants living in the region. The main objective of this research is to assess landslide susceptibility map, understanding the controlling factors and mechanism of landslide. In this study, landslide susceptibility map was developed based on four parameters such as slope inclination, lithology, landuse, and distance to faults. Supported by GIS software, scores given to each class of parameters were done according to landslide density, a ratio between the area occupied by the landslide pixels on a class of a certain parameter and the total area of that class, changed into percentage. Meanwhile, weights for all parameter were determined by using opinion-based scores adopting a criterion of analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The landslide susceptibility zonation map shows that the area of the prediction groups of very low, low, moderate, and high landslide susceptibility are 29 %, 17 %, 36 %, and 18 %. A significant percentage (18 %) of the research area has high of landslide susceptibility. As a result, landslide susceptibility map was a very reliable result as it has a close relationship with the real situation in the field. The results reveal that the high susceptibility zones were located along the steep slope showing the coincidence with the landslides locations. The most controlling factors of landslide occurrence are the slope inclination and lithology. Meanwhile, the second important parameters in controlling the occurrences of landslide are distance to fault and landuse.
