Summary: | The Celebes Black Monkeys (Macaca nigra) are found in the Celebes
Island, moreover they are found in Bacan Island too, the Province of North
Mollucas. Morphological characters of the black monkeys in Bacan Island are in
common with the existing black monkeys on the Island of Celebes. The existence
of people activities around in the area of Sibela Mountain Nature Reserve Bacan,
would has an impact influence of growth population and behaviour changes could
be dynamic of Celebes Black Monkey. This purpose of the research is to study the
vigilance and mating behaviour of Celebes Black Monkey (Macaca nigra) in the
area of Sibela Mountain Nature Reserve Bacan, South Halmahera District,
Province of North Mollucas. The research observation used for data retrieval
vigilance and mating behaviour is All Occurence Sampling and Focal Animal
Sampling Methods. The result showed that the Celebes Black Monkey in the area
of Sibela Mountain Nature Reserve has a high level of vigilance. The ability to
detect and react in primary and conversion forest, showed no significant
differences (p>0,05). The Celebes Black Monkey in primary and conversion
forest often uses tree height of 0-35 meters and encountered in the upper, middle
and bottom canopy. A Wilcoxon and Friedman test results on the use of height
and canopy trees showed no significant differences (p>0,05). Eventhough
statistics show no significant difference, but there is a tendency that a level of
vigilance of Celebes Black Monkey in the area of Sibela Mountain Nature
Reserve will be reduced. It is even possible a positive reaction, if the activity in
the area of Sibela Mountain Nature Reserve is increasing. Also eventhough the
form of mating behaviour has a low percentage (41,03%), but could not said to
have been disturbed by human activity. Time used for copulation,
usually happen in the morning (18 times), decreased during the day (7 times) and
more increased in the afternoon (14 times). Time recorded, the longest was 6,12
sec. and 4,20 sec. is the fastest.
