Description
Summary:Currently petroleum is still the main source of energy in meeting the needs in the country, while the reserves are running low. Consequently Indonesia will depend on other countries , so as to respond this problem the potency of national energy resources other than petroleum must be optimized. Concept of energy security is very important for Indonesia. Alternative energy sources other than petroleum substitutes like coal and nuclear power, but both have drawbacks, namely the use of coal requires special attention to its environment impact and its use of nuclear power is still not socially acceptable. Based on this reason, this study is conducted with the aim to know the process of nuclear power to support coal based power generation in order to strengthen national energy resilience and its impact on the environment. The method used in this study is a qualitative method, with the type of descriptive data management. Data collection techniques include interviews, observation, and literature studies or documents / archives. The source persons of this research are the head of PTAPB-BATAN Yogyakarta, national energy experts, and practitioners of nuclear energy. Analysis technique used is an interactive analytical model, which is engaged in the analysis of three major components, consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions, it were then analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The theory used is the theory of nuclear power, coal, and the concept of national energy security. The research indicates that in the utilization of coal gasification technology, nuclear power can be used to convert coal into a gas as a power plant that is environmentally friendly with levels of CO2 emissions lower than the direct combustion of coal. The heat required by coal gasification is supplied from the heat generated by high-temperature nuclear reactors with Helium as cooler. This system gives better security level if compared with water-cooled nuclear reactors because it has more reliable construction and better efficiency of heat transfer. Moreover, because the use of nuclear reactors, the of power generator based on coal gasification must be placed in secure and safe area from the earthquake, so that the safety of the reactor is much ensured. Contribution of electrical energy by using nuclear energy in coal gasification is 1,867 MWe. Thus the use of nuclear power as supporting coal for electricity generation can be an alternative energy to substitute oil that is safe for the environment in order to strengthen national energy resilience.
