Summary: | The presence of metallic iron in high concentrations in groundwater become a
serious problem in the provision of clean water. Among the efforts to reduce
ground water iron metal is calcined utilization of natural zeolites as ion exchange
media. The purpose of this study to determine the wear time calcined natural
zeolite used in ion exchange operations reduce the metal content of iron in ground
water clean water treatment process.
In this study, before being used for the operation of ion exchange on zeolite
characterization is carried out first. If the ground water containing ferrous metals
with a concentration of 3.142 mg / L is passed on sporting shaped water pipe
diameter 20.32 cm and height 120 cm which already contains 25 kg of natural
zeolite calcined at temperatures of 2000C for 60 minutes, the aggregate size (4.8 -
2.4) mm. Use of effluent discharge is maintained at 500 mL / min, continuous run
operations using a fixed bed flow system. At every 24-hour effluent water
accommodated and measured levels of iron.
Characterization results showed that the zeolites used include mordenit,
containing 69.98% SiO 2 (silicate), cation exchange capacity me/100 30.29 g,
9.35 m2/gr specific broad face, 18.20 10-3 cc / g, finger average pore radius 38.94
. Wear time for the calcined zeolite ion exchange operation was 9 days and in
operation for 9 hours continuously, then the clean water produced as much as 6.48
m3.
