Summary:One of the legacies of traditional architecture technologies that can still be found today is empyak structure. Empyak known by the Java community, especially in Yogyakarta today suffered a setback in terms of quantity. Tendency for people to no longer use the structure empyak because this technology is not a perfect technology that can last forever. Many new vulnerabilities that arise when faced with new problems caused by changes in lifestyle that a new society. Research on the problems encountered in technology empyak be required to maintain the sustainability of bamboo roof structure of this technology. Research on the technology should see a dialog between humans and their environment. If the dialogue fails then a technology can not be created or evolved. Dialogue can be technical, product, process, and theory. The steps of this research is done by direct observation of the object. These observations are carried out in two stages, namely pre-research stage to see the object in general empyak and research phase to explore objects in greater detail. The results of data analysis which is a dialogue between the field data (observation technical) and conceptual data (interviews) in order to discover the problem why empyak structure can not evolved technologically. There are three steps analysis conducted in this study. First, the analysis of data from pre research. At this stage, the 20 objects observed are classified based on the uniqueness of its constituent elements. So we get three categories namely empyak structural typologies: typologies empyak based on the gendong element, empyak typology based on the geometry of the roof, and the typology based on the form of usuk element. The second stage of analysis, analysis of data from five objects observed. The third stage of analysis is an analysis of technical factors, products, processes, and theory. Based on the above analysis, which causes empyak technology can not be developed are: Social change in modern society that are difficult to obtain mutual aid personnel; Easily get information to make an alternative construction to build homes in the communities more and more; efficiency of time and materials required for empyak structures less compared with other structural materials; Need a place large enough to assemble empyak; theory about new techniques to efficiently manufacture empyak not develop.
