description Background: The basic capital of quality human development begins since an infant is still in the womb which is then followed by administering of breast milk at an early age to the infant aged 6 months (exclusive breastfeeding). One of the efforts to improve exclusive breastfeeding is through health promotion activities by way of counseling and education in the third trimester pregnant women, in order that the mothers are better equipped to provide breast milk as early as possible. Objective: To know the difference of education and counseling methods on breastfeeding success. Methods: This was a clinical trial with a design of randomized clinical trial. The subjects were all third-trimester pregnant women who came to the Lepo Lepo Inpatient Health Center of Kendari as many as 102 people who were divided into two groups that met the criteria for inclusion in the period of January to April 2011, in which 51 mothers were in counseling group and 51 mothers were in the education group. Results: This was to find a relationship between the variables of maternal age, knowledge, education and maternal attitude. The analysis showed that maternal age, knowledge, education and attitude of mothers had an insignificant relationship with the independent variables (method of counseling and education) because of the value of p> 0.05. There were no significant differences in maternal attitudes toward continuation of exclusive breastfeeding in the group who were given both counseling and education. Maternal education was not as a confounding variable on the relationship between the counseling method and breastfeeding success, but it was a modification effect in the relationship between the counseling method and maternal education and breastfeeding success. Conclusion: The provision of education method in pregnant women was better than providing counseling on breastfeeding success. The level of education was very influential in providing counseling and education on breastfeeding for pregnant women to breastfeeding success.
