Summary: | Root rot disease on pepper caused by Phytophthora capsici is one of the most
important diseases on pepper. The using of antagonistic fungus of
Trichoderma harzianum as a biological control agent of the pathogen is one of the
important alternatives in controlling P. capsici without causing a negative effects on the
environment. The objective of the research was to know about the ability of application
T. harzianum inoculum in pressing the development of root rot disease, and influencing
the growth of pepper seedlings. and to know about the effective application time of
T. harzianum inoculum in pressing the development of root rot disease and increasing
the growth of pepper seedlings.
This research was done in Agricultural Mycology Laboratory, Agriculture Faculty
of Gadjah Mada University, and in the screen house in Condongcatur, Yogyakarta (113
m from sea level) from May 2010 until July 2011. This research was arranged in a
completely randomized design, with five treatments of application time of T. harzianum
inoculum, their were control treatments without application time of T. harzianum
inoculum (K), application time of T. harzianum inoculum for 0 week (S0), application
time of T. harzianum inoculum for 1 week (S1), application time of T. harzianum
inoculum for 2 weeks (S2), application time of T. harzianum inoculum for 3 weeks (S3),
and application time of T. harzianum inoculum for 4 weeks (S4) before planting. Each
treatments was replicated 15 times. The observed parameter contained disease
percentage, the inhibition of antagonistic fungus, disease infection rate, plants height,
the number of leaves, fresh and dry weight of root, stem and leaves on pepper seedlings,
and P. capsici population density. The result showed that application time of T.
harzianum inoculum for 4 weeks (S4) before planting is an effective time in pressing the
development of root rot disease than the other treatments, also had significant effect on
increase the growth of pepper seedlings. The antagonism test showed that T. harzianum
could inhibit P. capsici in vitro. This result proves that application time of T. harzianum
inoculum for 4 weeks (S4) before planting was more effective in pressing the
development of root rot disease and being able to increase the growth of pepper
seedlings.
