| Summary: | This research deals with the conversational analysis of Twitter, which
includes an analysis of conversational structure forms, linguistic characteristics of
Twitter, and forms of identity used in virtual world. Besides, this research also
discusses about Cooperative Principles of Grice in Twitter conversation. Twitter is an
online social networking service and micro blogging service that enables its users to
send and read text-based posts of up to 140 characters, known as "tweets".
This research aims at describing the Twitter conversational structure forms
and to analyze 1) its linguistic characteristics, 2) various forms of abbreviations and
emoticons on speech, 3) the use of profanities and capital letters in the conversations,
and 4) the speech act may obey or violate the Cooperative Principles.
This is a descriptive qualitative research because it attempts to describe
particular linguistic phenomena related to the object of the study. The following steps
had taken. First, the identification of data taken from twitter is conducted. Second,
after the identification is done, the data (transcriptions of twitter conversations)
started to be collected. After the data collection accomplished, the data can be
classified and analyzed according to some problem proposed.
The result of the study exhibits that 1) Twitter conversation has two forms of
structure: complete structure and incomplete structure, 2) abbreviated form of words
and emoticons in the conversations used as a substitute for the expression of speech,
3) profanities, capital letters, and forms of connotative words with negative meaning
used by Twitter users serves to indicate the level of intimacy between users, and 4)
violation of cooperative principles in twitter conversation often happens in virtual
communication.
In addition, the research on language variations in everyday communication is
also intriguing to be further observed.
