The cultural life system is considered to be a very important fact. Yet, it should be taken into consideration that Bedhaya Semang originated from the past, i.e. (1613�1645) or the era of Islamic Mataram. Consequently, this explanation cannot put aside the historical aspect. Bedhaya Semang which is regarded to be the oldest heirloom bedhaya in the Court of Yogyakarta, has not been touched for almost a century, since the reign of His Royal Highness Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII (1921�1939). The influence of the modern perspective was realy be on the dances at the court at that time, which is so many new dances were be on the court living. So much interesting on the new thing, makes no attention on the old tradition. So on this situation Bedhaya Semang has been �despositioned� as the source of all Bedhaya and Serimpi dances at the Court of Yogyakarta. It was so laborious and complicated to dissect and observe Bedhaya Semang. In spite of this fact, through an exhaustive effort accompanied by great patience, the introductory research of this dissertation had succesfully been able to put this dance into form and the reactualizationed it on October 7th, 2002 at the Bangsal Kencana of the Court of Yogyakarta, celebrating the thirteenth anniversary of the coronation of His Royal Highness Sultan Hamengku Buwono X. Then Bedhaya Semang was documented in the form of a complete dance script that could be understood easily and in the form of an audiovisual recording. It is hoped that this research will be advantageous in contributing valuable idea to the development of dance in the Court of Yogyakarta and to the scientific knowledge of dance in general.
