description Development of photoreduction method for Cr(VI) ion waste treatment with organic reductor substances extracted from rotten cassava leaves has been studied. This study consist of dissolving organic reductor substances from rotten cassava leaves in water medium, determining oxalic acid content in rotten cassava leaves and photoreduction of Cr(VI) ion without or with addition of rotten cassava leaves extractant and pure oxalic acid. In the dissolution, time, temperature and mass of cassava leaves were optimized. Photoreduction of Cr(VI) ion was carried out by batch system in which the effect of pH, mole ratio of Cr(VI) ion to oxalic acid from rotten cassava leaves extractant and kinetics of Cr(VI) ion reduction with addition of rotten cassava leaves extractant were evaluated. The results showed that the dissolution of 3 g of rotten cassava leaves in 100 mL H2O at 50 °C within 150 minutes could dissolve optimum oxalic acid as much as 26.67 mg/g rotten cassava leaves (2.66%). The addition of rotten cassava leaves extractant has increased the effectiveness of photoreduction of ion Cr(VI) from 17.85% to 99.74%. The roles of organic reductor substances are as OH radical scavenger and as reductor. The optimum photoreduction could be reached when pH 2, and mole ratio of Cr(VI) ion to oxalic acid of 1:1.92 was applied. The reduction of Cr(VI) ion followed second order reaction to Cr(VI) ion with k' values of 15.855 M-1minute-1 for non irradiated system and 22.307 M-1minute-1 for irradiated system
