Description
Summary:Background : Allicin is the main component of fresh garlic with multiple bioactivities as therapeutic agent, which could enhance wound healing. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of topical aqueous garlic extract on healing process of oral ulcer model. Method: Thirty males SD rats divided into two groups as experimental and control groups. After sedated with 0.2 ml intramuscular Ketamine injection, ulcer model was made by applying with 99.5% glacial acetic acid-moistened paper disc on rat buccal mucosa. This would generate an ulcer, similar to stomatitis contact in human for next two days. In the experimental group, one drop of aqueous garlic extract was applied twice daily onto the lesion. Three rats in each group were sacrificed on days 2, 3, 6, 9 and 12. An area of the ulcer in buccal mucosa were measured, then histologically processed and stained with Giemsa and HE. The following data, an ulcer area, density of mast cells, density of macrophages, and re-epithelization were analyzed statistically by independent ttest and one-way ANOVAs followed by correlation analysis with pvalues <0.05. Result: Statistic analysis revealed that there were significantly differences on mast cell degranulation index, density of macrophage and re-epitelization but not for contraction wound rate. By description analysis, it appears that aqueous garlic extract have an accelerate effects on all of wound healing parameters in experimental groups. Conclusion: It concluded that the topical application of aqueous garlic extract can hasten the healing of oral ulcer model. This study suggests that aqueous garlic extract could be developed as therapeutic agent for aphthous ulcer
