description This study aims to describe spatial fragmentation due to residential development on wetland ecosystems. The main objectives of this study are: (1) spatial evaluation of composition and configuration of the use of wetland based on multi-temporal geospatial data, (2) evaluation of spatial fragmentation as a result of changes in shape, structure, and pattern of wetlands usage in Surabaya and its surroundings, (3) data model and visual model of spatial fragmentation of wetlands. The research was conducted on wetland ecosystems with three landform units i.e. fluvial (F), fluvio-marine (FM) and marine (M) in three different administrative regions i.e. Gresik, Surabaya, and Sidoarjo. This study used exploratory methods of geospatial data from various sources both analog and digital form of multi-temporal and multi-resolution. Those geospatial data were grouped into four time periods: (a) before 1965, (b) between 1965-1985, (c) between1985-2005, and (d) after 2005. The basic principle in this exploratory research was conducted by using"morfo-spasio-quantitative" technique through detection, identification, and measurement of the dynamics of land use as the basis for analysis of composition and configuration of conversion pattern on wetland ecosystems. The results of the conversion pattern analysis of wetland ecosystems were used to describe the form and spatial fragmentation of the man made wetlands ecosystems. Furthermore, based on the two objectives, data and visual models of spatial fragmentation of wetland ecosystems were formulated. The main result of this study shows that the development of settlement in Surabaya and its surroundings area has resulted in spatial fragmentation on the wetland ecosystems. During the period before 1965, the spatial fragmentation was not observable since the settlement tended to follow the pattern of landform. Similarly, during the period of 1965-1985the spatial fragmentation was not so much evident, even though fragmentation began to appear in some places especially in the fluvial (F) landform. During the period of 1985-2005, the spatial fragmentation was clearly evident on the fluvial (F) landform and started to spread out to the fluvio-marine (FM) and marine (M) landforms. During the period after 2005, the spatial fragmentation already took place in the whole area of study, and formeda non specific pattern of wetland landform. Even though the geospatial data were considerably completed, this study is not without problem. The main problem is that the quality of geospatial data was varied. However, one important thing to be noted that this study was successfully formulated as the solution of the problem to achieve the objectives of the study
