description Background: Diarrhea an environmental diseases cause of morbidity and mortality, in highest prevalence at children under five. Diarrhea mortality in infants of 31.4% and 25.2% for young children. Approximately 35.3% of diarrhea at children before aged five dominated by parents of elementary education and not even in school. Contagious diarrhea causing outbreak first in prevalence by 28.7%. Objective: Research to determine sociodemographic and environmental sanitation hygiene at diarrheal young children in Makassar. Methods: The case control study designed in equivalent comparison. 124 cases were children before five years as diarrhea patient in health center sites. Group control were not diarrheal children living close to the cases. Results: Diarrhea proportion by sex in 50.8% male and 49.2% of female. Approximately 19.4% of diarrhea at children before 6 months, 45.2% of toddlers at 7-24 months, and 35.5% of children aged over 25 months. Higher maternal educations lead to lower diarrheal children. Mother never attended in school at OR 4.714, elementary school in OR of 4.174, junior high school at 3.857, and senior high school to OR by 2.816. Maternal knowledge cause of diarrhea at children, in sufficient knowledge by OR at 2.092 and 3.697 for lower. Unhygienic excreta disposal cause of diarrheal children in OR by 3.289, higher than water seal latrine, but plengseng not latrine to cause. Risk contamination level of drinking water supplies lead to diarrhea by very high risk category in OR 3.310, at high risk of 2.613, and 2.633 for medium. Diarrhea at children under five negatively associated in maternal employment status, maternal age, and panggung house. Conclusion: Maternal education, maternal knowledge, contamination risk level of drinking water supplies, and excreta disposal causes of children suffer from diarrhea. Increase of maternal knowledge, motivating mother using for healthy latrine, recommended to use for drinking water supplies away from contaminants, and improving chlorination in drinking water supplies, qualified reducing spread of diarrhea in children under five years.
