description | The objectives of this research was to investigate the effect of hydrogen
peroxide and sodium hydroxide solution treatment on the mechanical properties of
hybrid coconut fibers as well as the quality of composite products from the the
fibers.
The variabels that was studied in the sodium hydroxide solution treatment
was soaking duration. Meanwhile, in the hydrogen peroxide solution treatment,
the variabels were solution concentration, pH and temperature. Composite
products with fiber-resin volume fraction of 20%, 30% and 40% were tested using
standart method of JIS K 7113 (1981) (tensile strength), ASTM C393 (bending
test), ASTM D3379 (fiber tensile test) and hardness test (Vickers).
The results showed that hybrid coconut fiber soaked in hydrogen
peroxide solution had better mechanical properties compared with the fiber
soaked in sodium hydroxide solution. The optimum condition for fiber soaking in
hydrogen peroxide solution was reached at solution concentration of 3%,
temperature of 60, and pH of 11. The resulting composite from the optimum
soaking had 40.48 MPa tensile strength, 30.15% elongation and 134.24 MPa
modulus elasticity. The optimum combination of composite product was obtained
at fiber-resin ratio of 40% (60% resin) with an engineering stress of 13.47 MPa
and 0.16% strain. Economic analysis showed that the production of motorcycle
body composite from hybrid coconut fibers treated in hydrogen peroxide solution
was feasible for futher implementation. |
