description | Palembang is an old city well-known as a water city, because it is mostly watered by tributaries of river with estuaries in Musi River. Palembang City has some titles in the Dutch colonial period, including the twenty-islands city (stad der twinting eilands), Venesia Hindia, or Het Indische Venetie and the hundred-rivers city. According to history and archeological findings, it can be known that river-edge settlements in Palembang have existed since hundred years ago, and it can be traced back to hundred years before Sriwijaya Kingdom was established (centuries VII-XIII M). At the period of Palembang Sultanate, the provisions were implemented for comers from Chinese, India, Arab, Europe and other ethnic groups, which want to live in Palembang that they should live in Rakit House above water. The architecture of traditional Rakit House was influenced by the architecture or culture of Chinese, because since early it was occupied mostly by Chinese people. It can be seen from the archival shape of roof, a basic construction of square blocks, and the symmetrical shape of building. The Rakit House reflected the image with the same proportion, although the size was not surely the same. The objectives of study are to find out relationship between the principles of China architectural proportion and the existing proportion in the traditional Rakit Houses building by a deductive analysis and to find out the existing proportion in the Rakit Houses building by a Statistical method. Result of the study indicates that there was no indication of the application of the principles of Chinese proportion in the physical proportion of the traditional Rakit Houses building in Palembang. It was because the Rakit Houses building did not show the strong indication of appropriateness with the prevailing provisions in the theory of Chinese proportion, i.e. jian modul, construction scale, Lu Ban scale, and proportion of two to three, but all the four buildings of Rakit House shown indications of the determination of house dimension based on the lucky number of Lu Ban scale, which was associated with the Chinese mythology believed by Chinese ethnic group and application of the principles of 2:3 ratio at the composition of space. Result of the study shows that physical proportion of the traditional Rakit Houses building in Palembang was the proportion of the ratio of physical inter-element size of the building. |
