KAJIAN FOTOOKSIDASI As(III) TERKATALISIS TiO2 PHOTOOXIDATION STUDY OF As(III) CATALYZED BY TiO2

Photooxidation of As(III) catalyzed by TiO2 has been studied. The photooxidation process was carry out in a closed reactor equipped with UV lamp, by stirring and irradiating a mixture of 5 mg/L As(III) solution and 5 mg TiO2 powder for a certain period of time. description Photooxidation of As(III) catalyzed by TiO2 has been studied. The photooxidation process was carry out in a closed reactor equipped with UV lamp, by stirring and irradiating a mixture of 5 mg/L As(III) solution and 5 mg TiO2 powder for a certain period of time. In the present work, the effect of exposure time, As(III) concentration, solution pH and the presence of citric acid on the photooxidation effectiveness of As(III) catalyzed by TiO2 have been evaluated. The effectiveness of the oxidized As(III) was presented as % oxidized As (III), that was calculate by substracting the initial As(III) amount with unoxidized one. The concentration of unoxidized As(III) was determined using toulidine blue complexing agent by mean of UV-visible spectrophotometry method. The results showed that the use of 5 mg TiO2 could increase the photooxidation effectiveness of 5 mg/L As(III) from 35.38% to 95.38%, which was initiated by adsorption process. The photooxidation effectiveness of As(III) increased with the longer the exposure time, and reached the maximal effectiveness 95.38% in 30 minutes of the irradiation times. The solution pH that gave highest effectiveness of As(III) photooxidation, 95.38%, was 7. It was also found that As(III) with the concentration as much as 0.01 - 1 mg/L could be oxidized completely (100%), while increasing concentration gave a decrease in the As(III) photoxidation. The presence of citric acid decreased the photooxidation effectiveness of As(III) from 95.38% to 87.69%, due to the competition of the consumption of OH radical for the oxidation of As (III) and citric acid.
