(Civil Engineering)) Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) is a class of auxiliary damping devices in order to mitigate the vibrational energy of structures. Herein, two new techniques are proposed in order to impart additional damping to TLCD, include placing rotatable screens (Sc) at the horizontal portion of TLCD, in which damping control through change in closing angle of screens, or installing baffles in which damping control by change in the blockage ratio. Compare to other existing methods, the proposed techniques are simpler in design, easier in installation and maintenance, more practical to be used in real scale TLCDs, and have high potential to be used as semi- active or active control. In this study, the dynamic characteristics of modified TLCD with different types of screens and baffles were obtained followed by investigating their effect on the characteristics of Structure-TLCD system (S-TLCD), and structural responses of the S-TLCD under harmonic excitation, and earthquake records. The effects of baffles were checked in three places. TLCD equipped with baffles located horizontally at the external side of entrance of columns and with 60 % blockage ratio (TLCD+HSB60), and the TLCD equipped with rotatable screens by closing angle of 50 degree (TLCD+Sc50) showed the best performance among different types of baffles and screens, and reduced the displacement response of the structure by 74%, and 78%, respectively. However, the TLCD without baffles or screens reduced the structure displacement response by 51%. The head loss coefficient of TLCD+Sc50 and TLCD+HSB60 were 5.1 and 4.8 times more than TLCD, respectively. The system was also excited by different earthquake records, categorized as far-field and near-filed. Addition of TLCD+HSB60 and TLCD+Sc50 to the structure, caused the acceleration responses reduced from 17 to 64%. However, the TLCD+Sc50 performed better in response reduction of the structure. It was also found that the system is more effective when subjected to far-field earthquakes. In general, addition of the baffles and screens improved the effectiveness of TLCD when the structure was subjected to seismic action.
