description The grain size in spray formed Ni superalloys is important in controlling subsequent workability. Currently, there is little understanding of the factors controlling the as spray formed grain size. In an effort to simulate preform solidification conditions immediately after deposition during spray forming, this paper presents an experimental study of the microstructure and coarsening kinetics of equiaxed grains in spray formed IN718 at high solid fractions of 0.6 to 0.9. Measurements of coarsening constants as. function of solid fraction have been compared with previous similar studies on spray formed Al, Cu and Ni alloys. Coarsening data for these materials have been discussed in terms of a previous simple grain growth mode, and qualitative modifications to this model of solid/liquid grain coarsening in spray forming have been presented.
