description | The Oxford Blue Pages is a web service developed as part of the Building the Research Information Infrastructure Project (BRII.) BRII aims at producing an infrastructure to collect and re-use Research Activity Data (RAD) from across the University of Oxford. RAD is data about research e.g., researchers, projects, outcomes and funding. The Blue Pages is designed to access RAD from different angles and at different depths. Through an intuitive environment, sophisticated search options, and a simple and coherent display of information users are able to explore and find information about research in different subject fields as well as discover connections within and beyond the University of Oxford. As part of the development process a series of user tests were planned to make sure the Blue Pages were designed to fit the needs of groups of users around and outside the University. The tests were designed to test conventional software usability but also to test users’ perceptions of the usefulness of the tool in their own research related activities or the ones who support them. This paper discusses the outcomes and lessons learned from these user tests as well as their impact in the design of the Blue Pages and the BRII Project overall. |
