description The views of Leila Sattary on the technologies that will helping in building zero-carbon emitting houses in the UK are presented. Solar power technologies including photovoltaic (PV) cells can help in building such homes and reducing adverse impact of carbon emissions on the environment. Significant research efforts are continuing to improve the cost and performance of PVs. The ability to create efficient PVs depends on creating a semiconductor with a bandgap that can accept the majority of the sun's photons. Thin-film cells involve another significant approach to manufacture cost-effective PV cells where the film composition can be adjusted to optimize efficiency and produce an efficient and cost-effective PV cell. A research group at the Korea Institute of Technology has also developed a new way of using marine algae and seaweed to produce bioethanol, eliminating the the use of land area completely.
