description | I.Sicily is a project to make freely available the complete corpus of inscriptions from ancient Sicily, in all languages across all of antiquity. To find out more about the project and the data within it, please visit https://isicily.wordpress.com. For technical information, see http://sicily.classics.ox.ac.uk/about. The data in I.Sicily can be searched in many different ways (see https://isicily.wordpress.com/how-to/ for guidance). The main set of search tools can be found on the inscriptions page, but it is also possible to explore the data via museum collections or existing publications. For guidance on how to cite I.Sicily see https://isicily.wordpress.com/how-to/#cite.
I.Sicily is a continuous work-in-progress. The corpus currently contains data for over 3,200 inscriptions on stone, and is continuously expanding. The data is either derived from existing publications or autopsy. Although we are confident that the quality of the metadata is good, the underlying TEI files mostly still require checking, having been created through an automated conversion process from an earlier data format. All inscription files are clearly marked as either ‘unchecked’, ‘draft’ or ‘edited’ and should be treated accordingly. In particular, users should be aware that at present the actual inscription texts are all unchecked, and mostly derived from other sources via automatic conversion, unless explicitly stated otherwise. The revision of the texts is the main focus of current work. We have chosen to make the files available in their current state in the belief that the data and the site is already of considerable value, and to encourage collaboration. I.Sicily is a project to create and make freely available online the complete corpus of inscriptions from ancient Sicily. The project includes texts in all languages (Greek, Latin, Phoenician/Punic, Oscan, Hebrew, and Sikel), from the first inscribed texts of the Archaic period (7th-6th centuries BC) through to those of late Antiquity (5th century AD and later). In the first instance the project is restricted to texts engraved on stone, but it is intended to expand that coverage in the future. The project uses TEI-XML mark-up, according to the EpiDoc schema. |
