description Re-entry presents formerly incarcerated individuals with a multitude of triggering risk factors and challenges that make reintegration difficult. The role of re-entry policies and practices is to recognize and moderate the impact of those stressors to encourage successful community reintegration. While government agencies and nonprofit organizations offer a number of programs intended to support and improve prisoner re-entry outcomes, relatively few have been rigorously evaluated for their effects, and those that have sometimes have harmful unintended consequences for their participants. For this reason, in this chapter, we advocate for more evidence-based evaluations of current re-entry support as well as the strict use of evidence when designing future policy and programming.
