description Vygotsky and Bernstein in the Light of Jewish Tradition discusses Jewish cultural tradition as witnessed in the work of Russian psychologist Lev S. Vygotsky and British sociologist Basil Bernstein. It does so through accounts of features of their biographies and outlines of their respective theoretical contributions to social science. The claim is that both writers were profoundly infl uenced by Jewish orientations to meaning. The essence of this orientation to meaning is laid bare at the opening of the book. The authors present a quote from a text entitled “Jews and Words” by Amos Oz and Fania Oz-Salzberger: “Jewish continuity has always hinged on uttered and written of interpretations, debates, and disagreements, and on a unique human rapport.”
