description This paper investigates the corrosion behaviour of dissimilar welds between duplex stainless steel and carbon steel under atmospheric environments. Duplex stainless steel grade EN1.4062 was welded to two different carbon steel grades S355J2 and P460NL2 by means of gas metal arc welding (GMAW) to form T-joints. The fabricated specimens were subjected to 12-month exposure tests in 4 different atmospheric environments, distributed across 3 different countries: Belgium, England, and Portugal. A total of 84 samples were designed, fabricated and sandblasted, in order to satisfy the surface requirements of ISO 8501-1 [1]. Exposure racks were assembled to expose a range of samples to the weather conditions at each test location following the same methodology. The environmental parameters influencing the corrosion behaviour of dissimilar welds were monitored on a continuous basis and correlated to the respective corrosion rates. Uniform, pitting, and galvanic corrosion were studied. Based on these measurements, guidance was given on the necessary protective coating for such welds in the context of applications in structures.
