Summary: | A case control study in Oxford is described, in which patients with Hodgkin's disease aged less than 40 years, diagnosed over a 10 yr period, were individually matched (for age, sex, social class and area of residence) with other patients not suffering from cancer. Ninety one patients and 66 controls were interviewed. A number of 'links' were established between pairs of patients, such as through attendance at the same school or work place, but preliminary analysis of these data would suggest that a similar number of links was present among the matched controls. Suitable methods of analysing studies of this kind are suggested. Person to person transmission of Hodgkin's disease is thus still very much an open question and further epidemiological studies are urgently required. |
