Summary:According to the most recent update of the Global Burden of Disease, the main cause of burden among mental health disorders worldwide is major depression (more than four times higher than schizophrenia), with an increase by 13·8% from 1990 to 2013. This is a global problem and there are good reasons to believe that the exceedingly high direct and indirect costs for depression are largely due to substantial deficits in treatment provision. Antidepressants are the mainstay of treatments in adults.
