Summary: | The paper discusses the evolution of a software system, and its influence on econometric practice. The main trends are from essentially 'techniques' to primarily graphical tools; a formalization of the underlying econometric modelling methodology; and a greatly increased emphasis on the user interface. Software has not only enabled vast calculations to be made that previous researchers deemed infeasible and allowed graphical presentation to render the resulting mass of output comprehensible, it has also altered the way in which econometric modelling is practiced, substantially improving the quality of empirical research. The present software exploits the Windows operating system to show data, results, evaluations, and graphics simultaneously on screen, thereby further facilitating econometric analyses.
