Its principal purposewas to consider the future of beech as a component of Chilterns woodlands. The fITst twocontributions, however, review the place of beech in Britain, and for comparison withcontinental Europe its role in the German state of Thuringia, one of the partner regions ofthe project, is also presented. The papers range from the results of academic research andliterature reviews to the authoritative opinions of individuals; in the latter case the viewsexpressed are personal and may not be validated but are intended to stimulate discussion...</p>
