description |
Preface

It fell to me as Keeper of Western Manuscripts in 1976 to take the decision to produce this catalogue, and in 1986 to write the Introduction to it. It now falls to me almost five years later as Bodley's Librarian to write the Preface. The intervening years have seen Mrs. Mary Clapinson become Keeper of Western Manuscripts and Mr. T. D. Rogers her deputy. They have also been years of considerable financial austerity in the Bodleian Library during which, because of staff shortages, the cataloguing of the collections of Western manuscripts has suffered greatly. Nevertheless, Mrs.Clapinson and Mr. Rogers have brought this catalogue to completion, and in doing so make available in print a mass of information about the very large post-medieval manuscript collections acquired by the Bodleian in the years between 1916 and 1975. In many ways, as the Introduction makes clear, this catalogue represents a landmark. In the new age of electronic data transfer it may well be the last one made available in printed form; it will certainly be the last one which is generated manually. Mrs. Clapinson and Mr. Rogers are to be congratulated on all the hard work that they have devoted to their enormous task. They have been helped by all their departmental colleagues over the years, whose work they have adapted to this Summary Catalogue format, but a particular debt of gratitude is owed to Ms. Cornelia Starks, who read the entire text in typescript, to Dr. Elizabeth Kreager, Mr. D. S. Porter and Mr S. R. Tomlinson, who each read sections of the proofs, and to Mr. G. P. Neate, who solved the problem of computerizing the index. At Oxford University Press Ms. Anne Ashby, Mr. Nick Clarke and Dr. John Was have been most helpful and supportive at all stages of this long task, and Hope Services (Abingdon) Ltd. have coped excellently with a series of technically very difficult typesetting problems.
