description Undertaken in 1993, this study is based on data provided by 4 diocesan secondary schools as to why parents chose to send their children to these schools. Various shortcomings of the data are acknowledged but the value of having a study based on a 100% sample of parents covering a total of 800 parents is in sharp contrast to other studies of parental choice at the time. The methodology used is discussed and the results are presented in 8 tables and related text and are also cross-tabulated with other studies of parental choice. The study suggests that in the choice of criteria, the sophistication shown by parents extends well beyond league tables. Whilst they are influenced by them, they also rely on recommendations of others, as well as their own impressions and those of their children on visits to the schools. The report ends with a series of questions for further study.
