description The Burrell Lecture of the Competition Law Association, given in London on March 19, 2007. The 2007 Burrell Lecture compares aspects of competition policy as between (i) Europe and the US, and (ii) law and economics. For cartels and mergers policies are broadly converged in both respects. For abuse of dominance there are clear trans-Atlantic differences, with many economists favouring a middle course. For vertical agreements on price there has been similar hostility in both jurisdictions but divergence between law and economics; the Leegin case before the US Supreme Court might change that.
