description The catalogue was translated from French in June 2018. A graduate student was employed to carry out this work as part of a larger project to research the provenance of the collection. The Department of History of Art houses visual material of significant importance in the historiography of Art History as a discipline. Of particular interest are the 125 large, high-quality photographs (specifically, carbon prints) of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel frescoes taken in 1869 by Adolphe Braun (1812-77). Braun was a key figure in the development of photographic reproductions of works of art. With the help of his studio, he was the first photographer to attempt the monumental task of photographing the Sistine Chapel frescoes, a landmark in the history of Western art. The project proposed by the Department was the first to catalogue an example of the complete series and then digitise and release the material online. [availble on Digital Bodleian from early 2019].
